Keys development status

Keys 0.14.6 is the current development build. The sections below separate completed work, the 0.15.0 milestone in progress, and later roadmap plans.

The core typing workflow is already substantial

Keys has progressed from a basic snippet library into a broader local typing toolkit with workspaces, variables, Form Fill, autocorrect, Clipboard History, rich snippets, images, and Windows Smart Paste.

  • Snippet library & automatic expansion
    Local folders, favorites, enabled state, search, literal triggers, Quick Expand, pause/resume controls, per-application exclusions, and hardened Windows expansion behavior.
  • Workspaces & reusable profile data
    Durable workspaces, workspace-scoped folders and exclusions, structured identity/contact/address/work/web/social profile data, and safe switching or reassignment between contexts.
  • Variables & Form Fill
    Built-in and custom variables, reusable $my… profile values, clipboard-aware expansion, generators and helpers, $cursor placement, plus native Windows Form Fill for explicitly authored fields.
  • Autocorrect & typing assists
    A large local correction library, custom corrections and exceptions, sentence capitalization, standalone-I correction, double-space periods, typography transforms, and conservative quote/bracket pairing — all with user control.
  • Local Clipboard History
    Privacy-filtered local history with duplicate collapsing, pins, search, retention controls, suggested snippets, Create Snippet, text transforms, and app exclusion awareness.
  • Library organization & bulk actions
    Keyboard-first multi-selection, bulk move/favorite/enable/delete, combined filters, comfortable and compact density options, and display-aware desktop window presets.
  • Rich snippets & image attachments
    Versioned rich snippets with paragraphs, line breaks, bold, italic, safe links and lists, plus stable image slots backed by local/remote validated media and safe cached fallback behavior.
  • Windows Smart Paste
    Destination-aware representation and delivery policies for plain text, intentional Markdown, sanitized HTML, images, and mixed content, with conservative fallbacks and temporary clipboard restoration.
  • Compatibility Lab
    Developer-facing compatibility testing with a running-app picker, bounded text/image/mixed fixtures, local overrides, privacy-safe diagnostics, session logs, and manual observation recording.
  • Accessibility, localization & shared UI
    Keyboard-first navigation, responsive Settings and editor surfaces, EN/ES/AR localization foundations, RTL-safe layouts, accessible focus semantics, and shared Pryven visual foundations.

Platform & Background Maturity

The current Keys milestone is making background behavior explicit, dependable, and recoverable while preserving local ownership of snippets, typing assistance, Clipboard History, and Smart Paste.

  • Lifecycle, window & background behavior
    Harden show, hide, restore, close-to-background, full quit, startup, and long-running runtime ownership so Keys never leaves an ambiguous or unusable background state.
  • Core disconnect & reconnect resilience
    Keep Keys useful when Core is unavailable, then reconnect safely without duplicate registrations, stale state, lost local data, or misleading capability status.
  • Shortcut & trigger registration resilience
    Treat global shortcuts, input monitoring, expansion triggers, clipboard listeners, and other platform resources as managed lifecycles with clear failure and recovery behavior.
  • Diagnostics, resource health & first-trigger reliability
    Use bounded local diagnostics to validate idle behavior, teardown, retries, focus transitions, and the required 0.15 Form Fill first-trigger stabilization without recording sensitive content by default.

What comes after Platform & Background Maturity

These are roadmap directions rather than promised release dates. Keys will expand only where behavior remains predictable, local-first, accessible, and safe around live user input.

    Add a Firefox-first browser controller and Smart Web Fill with explicit security, permission, field-matching, and minimum-data boundaries before Chromium-family parity.

    Use evidence-backed browser and app-family capabilities to choose safer representation and delivery plans without assuming every editor or web field accepts the same formats.
  • 0.16.0 · Conservative rich delivery
    Extend destination-aware text, Markdown, HTML, images, and mixed-content paths only where they can be validated without weakening Keys' fail-safe fallback behavior.
  • 0.17.0 · Release Maturity & Broad Polish
    Perform the privacy, accessibility, localization, performance, cross-platform validation, and release-readiness cleanup needed before later 1.0 planning.

    Close documented Windows, macOS, and Linux capability gaps, keeping unperformed manual or platform-specific validation clearly marked rather than implied.

    Harden settings, status, compatibility evidence, diagnostics, and everyday typing workflows into a coherent release surface without adding unnecessary service dependencies.

    If suite sync returns after the release-maturity work, allow portable preferences to sync while keeping device-specific window and layout state local by default.

    Plan the stable 1.0 contract and later capabilities only after browser, platform, lifecycle, privacy, and real-world compatibility evidence support them.

Designed to disappear into your workflow

Keys should help inside the applications you already use rather than become another place you must move your work into.

Local-first

Snippets, profiles, variables, clipboard history, compatibility observations, and diagnostics remain locally owned rather than requiring a remote service.

Input safety first

When Keys cannot confidently preserve the target, focus, input method, or delivery path, the safer behavior is to stop rather than guess.

Plain to rich, progressively

Simple text stays simple, while Markdown, HTML, images, and mixed content use richer paths only when the representation and destination justify it.

Accessible by default

Keyboard-first operation, predictable focus, readable layouts, localization, RTL support, and other access needs are part of the product rather than premium extras.

Useful everywhere you type

Keys is intended to reduce tiny repeated tasks across many apps rather than becoming another editor you must work inside.

Pre-release software

Keys is still in active development. Features, wording, screenshots, platform support, and release plans may change as implementation and real-world compatibility testing continue.
