Write freely. Keep control.
Quill is a local-first workspace for notes, writing, planning, structured knowledge, and personal reference — designed to grow from a quick thought into a deeper system without forcing your work into the cloud.
Quill development status
Quill 0.20.6 is the current development build. The sections below separate completed work, the 0.21.0 milestone in progress, and later roadmap plans.
A substantial local-first foundation is already working
Quill has moved well beyond a basic notes prototype. Core writing, organization, discovery, structured-data, customization, and accessibility systems are already implemented through the 0.17 development milestone.
- Rich Notes & dependable local storageVisual rich-text editing, formatting, autosave, lifecycle-safe writes, SQLite persistence, stable UUID identities, schema migrations, WAL journaling, and recovery-minded persistence behavior.
- Workspaces, notebooks & note organizationSeparate workspaces and notebooks, note lifecycle tools, favorites, tags and relationships, flexible creation presets, and searchable built-in starters for many everyday note types.
- Search, discovery & relationshipsIndexed search, note relationships, internal [[Note]] links, aliases, backlinks, unresolved-link handling, and discovery surfaces that build on Quill's canonical note model.
- Daily Notes & CalendarDaily-note notebooks with intentional date-based creation, month and agenda views, restore-aware navigation, and locale-aware calendar behavior.
- Core Wiki ModeWorkspace-wide or scoped Wiki Mode, generated Wiki Home views, recent pages, favorites, index and search, page summaries and priority, backlinks, wanted/broken links, orphan pages, and highly linked pages.
- FlowsKanban-style Flow boards with ordered lanes and cards, rich card details, references, persistence, and shared Quill foundations rather than a separate isolated task system.
- Databases Part 1Canonical Rich Note-backed records, typed properties, Table and List saved views, filters, multi-sort, grouping, summaries, saved-view management, relations, rollups, formulas, and recoverable record archiving.
- Built-in templates & repeatable note actionsA searchable built-in template gallery, notebook defaults, structured starters, contextual repeatable sections for maintenance, reading and travel notes, plus canonical horizontal rules.
- Themes, shortcuts & adaptable interfaceMultiple theme foundations, custom color controls, responsive desktop/compact layouts, resizable panes, shortcut remapping with conflict feedback, and settings built to remain predictable as Quill grows.
- Accessibility & localization foundationsKeyboard navigation, visible focus treatment, reduced-motion and contrast considerations, English/Spanish/Arabic localization foundations, right-to-left layouts, and locale-aware presentation.
Specialized Modes — Journal / Life + Story / Writing
The next Quill milestone composes the mature editor, Daily Notes, Calendar, Wiki, Databases, Flows, media, Tables, commands, references, and bounded notebook organization into two lightweight workflow modes.
Journal / Life Mode
Compose Daily Notes, Calendar, templates, Wiki relationships, media, and bounded notebook organization into a calm local-first space for personal routines, reflection, and life administration.
Story / Writing Mode
Compose canonical Notes with optional Databases, Flows, Tables, references, and focused writing structure for drafting, research, revision, and longer-form projects.
Shared mode composition
Keep both Modes lightweight: they reshape navigation and defaults around a workflow while continuing to use Quill's existing canonical Notes, persistence, search, and export boundaries.
Mode polish & safe boundaries
Validate accessibility, localization, responsive behavior, migrations, portability expectations, and clear exits back to ordinary Quill work before expanding the Mode surface.
What comes after Specialized Modes
These milestones follow the 0.21.0 Mode compositions. They are roadmap directions rather than promised release dates, and scope or ordering may change as the real workflows mature.
- 0.22.0 · Full Import / Export + BackupBuild portability around the actual near-term Quill surface: rich media, captured pages, tables, references, bounded notebook hierarchy, and Mode metadata with readable fallbacks.
- 0.22.1 · Performance & ScaleProfile larger libraries, image-heavy and captured-page Notes, table-heavy Notes, deeper hierarchy fixtures, and representative Journal / Life and Story / Writing workflows.
- 0.23.0 · General Quill Home ExpansionExpand Global and Workspace Home using the proven dashboard foundation, with useful deep links into nested content but no ownership of hierarchy persistence.
- 0.24.0 · Canvas + Browser Capture / Saved SourcesAdd mature visual-workspace and source-capture surfaces on top of canonical Notes, references, attachments, import, and capture contracts.
- 0.25.0 · Parity / Readiness SweepIdentify and close cross-platform, interaction, accessibility, localization, migration, reliability, and product-consistency gaps before late-stage release work.
- 0.26.0 · Statistics & InsightsExtend local statistics and insight surfaces for useful understanding of writing, Modes, and Quill usage without turning personal work into remote analytics.
- 0.27.0 · Ultrawide & Adaptive LayoutImprove large-display use, adaptive layouts, and split-view workflows for working with multiple pieces of Quill content side by side.
- 0.28.0 · Reusable Note TemplatesAdd user-owned reusable Note structures after real Journal / Life, Story / Writing, Wiki, Daily Notes, and other workflows are proven.
- 0.29.0 · Sync & Collaboration IntegrationIntegrate mature local features with the existing dormant sync foundations while preserving canonical IDs, local ownership, and safe offline behavior.
- 0.30.0 · Advanced Wiki & 1.0 GateFinish advanced Wiki capabilities, workflow polish, release-readiness validation, and the remaining deterministic work required for Quill's eventual 1.0 gate.
- Post-1.0 · AI Writing AssistanceExplore optional AI writing capabilities only after the pre-1.0 product contract, privacy boundary, and local-first foundations are mature.
Designed around the work, not the service
The roadmap can grow, but these principles are intended to stay stable.
Local-first
Core notes and organization remain useful without requiring a hosted service just to open or manage your own work.
One connected content model
Notes, databases, flows, wiki relationships, templates, media, search, and future capture features are designed to reuse shared Quill foundations rather than become disconnected mini-apps.
Ownership & portability
Your information should remain understandable, exportable, and recoverable instead of being valuable only while a remote service keeps running.
Accessible by default
Keyboard use, readable layouts, focus visibility, reduced motion, localization, and right-to-left support are product concerns, not premium extras.
Pre-release software
Quill is still in active development. Features, wording, screenshots, milestone numbers, and release plans may change as implementation and testing continue.
